Characteristics and Professional Competencies
of Computer science Teacher.
What Is a Computer Teacher?
Computer teachers help students learn
different computer-related skills based on grade level. An elementary level
teacher may help younger students learn how to navigate a computer, while a
postsecondary instructor may teach advanced programs and computer analysis.
They have many of the same duties as a regular teacher, including creating and
evaluating assignments and exams, monitoring student progress and enforcing
class rules. Depending on the level of education, they may also be required to
supervise students on free time, such as during lunch and recess. Computer
teachers need to stay up to date on current technology and applications for
their students. The chart below has information regarding possible job
opportunities in this field.
Characteristics o f Computer Teacher
- Cleaning
Personality: The personality of teacher of computer science should be
effective. In personality teacher’s outer shape, health, physical charm,
level, subject related knowledge, power, devotion, enthusiasm,
co-operation, frank, just feeling and endurance etc., are included.
Teacher should be cautions for his dress.
- Full and up-to-date knowledge of the subject: Teacher of computer science should have
full and up-to-date knowledge of his subject. Computer science is
continuously developing so teacher of computer science should have
information about latest researches and changes and should take interest
in literature related computer science for the deep study of subject.
Teacher should go in class with all preparations to save his teaching to
be incomplete and useless. According to Mr. Young,”It is first and basic
for each teacher that he has total control on the content, which he
teaches. On this he should have such control that talking there should be
an impression on his personality”.
- Desire of
Acquisition of knowledge: Computer science teacher should feel that computer science is
a living and developing subject. To study mental level of student
carefully, to arrange teaching according to understanding of student and
to confirm that present content is useful for student or not with the help
of different tools, this information is also necessary for teacher of
computer science.
- Patience and Tolerance:
A teacher of computer science should keep patience at
the time of teaching any fact, principle or syntax, Generally it is felt
that when a student does not understand anything in one time then teacher
beings vexed and he starts getting anger with student unnecessarily. They
should have such type of capacity and qualities that they can clear
abstract concepts with examples without any difficulty, dejection,
acrimony, fret or wrath.
- Objective in View: Objective view is improper according to social view.
To make some students pat and to do neglected behavior with other students
is not right deed and neither with rich families, and poor families, and relatives
and unknowns and intelligent and slow ridded student, partial behavior
should be done. For a teacher all students are same. If a teacher takes
interest to solve personal and homely problems of poor and backward
students with friendship and love, then by doing such he gets a permanent
respect in heart of students.
- Knowledge of effective Techniques: Computer Science teaching is an art
and expertness in this art cannot be gathered only by study of teaching
methods, even these models are much scientific. In which for swimming only
theoretical knowledge is not sufficient or not only by combination of
colours good picture cannot be made, in the same way each teacher cannot
be a good teacher until he does not expert in effective arts of teaching
as well as control of subject. A
teacher should proceed their
interest to research work of computer
- Master of Psychology: A computer science teacher should
make teaching planning by considering mental level of student. Because of
differences in learning speed and capacity of sharp minded, slow minded,
slow minded and general minded is different. For solution of different
problems he should have knowledge about basic principles of psychology;
auch as motivation, transfer of training, individual differences etc., therefore,
he can develop interest and positive attitude in students for computer. In
this way in todays advertising age seller generals interest for thing is
user by using psychology, in the same way it is necessary for teacher of
computer science that he should maintain attraction of students for
subject by making subject more immersing.
- Positive Attitude for Computer science: Teacher’s own point of view gives
much effect on learning speed of students. So computer science teacher
should use right and creative point or view for computer science. A
teacher who does not understand computer’s historical and social
importance and teaching computer as a general subject, in his class
computer science becomes a boring subject. Enthusiasm is such a thing
which cannot be thought of it only can be gathered.
- Interest in research in Computer Science: Being a computer specialist he should
know how to solve questions clearly and beautifully. Being a philosopher
he should have knowledge about scientific researches related to computer
science. A teacher of computer science necessarily should read much by
which he got glitter of enthusiasm for his subject. To export his
knowledge to other successfully, he should take benefit from past
experiences of wise men. He should take interest in education related
measure.
The computer teacher
should have following competencies:
1) Pedagogical Competencies: The basic premise to begin the definition
of pedagogy is: „any conscious activity by one person designed to enhance
learning in another‟. Pedagogy, therefore, describes the collected practices,
processes, strategies, procedures, and methods of teaching and learning.
Pedagogical Competencies
|
Demonstrated
through Activities
|
analyzing objectives
|
selecting computer
tools and pedagogy appropriate
to individual student‟s
instructional objectives
|
exploring content
|
choosing computer
tools and pedagogy that
integrate computers into whole
curriculum
|
assessing learners
|
picking computer
tools and pedagogy
to assess diverse needs of a
variety of
students in a heterogenous
class
|
discovering tasks
|
seeking contribution of ICT that allow teacher and students to
manage their own
learning and to improve their quality of work
|
determining
learning
strategies
|
planning an integrated
learning programme that allows a range of computer tools
and pedagogy to be used as and when required
|
evaluation teaching-
|
deciding computer tools and
pedagogy to assess performance levels of students as
well as teacher
|
2. Technological Competencies: Technology competency must not
be understood solely in terms of hardware and software. Technology
competencies help teachers
access, gather, present and
communicate, and manipulate
the information that is available
on software and internet resources, in the
form of
text, images, sound, etc.
Technology Competencies: EX:
Use windows
operating system plug-ins projector printer scanner digital camera word program
presentation program database
program graphics program publisher program
New software CD-ROMs/DVD computer files and folders
CD/USB devices world wide web
Internet trouble-shooting
3. Competencies in Integration of
Pedagogy and Technology: The
term integration refers to a combination of technology and traditional teaching
procedures to produce student learning. It comes with a willingness to combine
technology and teaching into a productive experience that moves the learner to
new understanding. Integrating technology in education for teaching-learning is
not simply a matter of acquiring competency in technology alone, nor in
pedagogy, nor even a combination of the two. Rather competencies of integration
are about appropriate selection, use, fusion and integration of many sets of
competencies, including, but not exclusive to, those in pedagogy and
technology. These competencies are creating a new environment where learners
are in control of their own learning needs and habits.
Examples:
Integration
Competencies: use computers in teaching-learning to update subject knowledge and teaching
skills
Prepare instructional material to support content
learning in the classroom for project-based collaborative learning
Activities for assign in tasks to students that
require them to use computers
to help students get access to right kind of
computer based instructions
to prepare tools and techniques for students’
evaluation for record keeping to share
information with professionals,
Parents or students to design personalized learning
experiences
to evaluate the usefulness of software to adapt
instructional software to the curriculum needs write courseware for lessons

The computer teacher
should have following competencies:
1) Pedagogical Competencies: 2) Technological Competencies:
3) Competencies in Integration of Pedagogy and Technology:
Role of
Seminars: Teachers can attend
seminars in Computer science and other subjects may be on the subject or some
particular topic. It can be arranged on various problems.
A working paper is prepared beforehand. It
is circulated among the participants. Various committees are formed for various
aspects of problems. The report is then read before General Assembly. It can be
held on co-curricular activities, techniques, computer science curriculum
improvements etc.
Role of projects/Workshops: They are bit different from seminars in their more practical
approach. They can arrange on lesson planning, curriculum construction etc. The
work is distributed among groups of various participants and these groups discuss
it intensively.
Projects are essential
to test the functioning of scientific principles. It is the sum total of all activities
done by students in natural or artificial environment.
